Project Overview
The “Realisation of Estuarine Nature in the Hedwige and Prosper Polder” project is being carried out in Zeelandic Flanders by a consortium consisting of Baggerwerken Decloedt & Zn, Jan De Nul and Aertssen. The objective of this large-scale project is to restore valuable estuarine ecosystems by depoldering the former agricultural land.
Before the depoldering works could commence, the environmental quality of the sediment had to be thoroughly assessed. This investigation is a crucial step in the project, providing insight into the environmental condition of the sediment and its suitability for the planned redevelopment.
MH Poly was commissioned to perform the sediment investigation within the Hedwige Polder. Our scope included both the field investigations and the preparation of the environmental reports in accordance with all applicable guidelines and standards.
MH Poly's Scope of Work
Within this project, MH Poly was responsible for:
- Conducting sediment investigations in accordance with applicable standards and regulations
- Carrying out fieldwork, including sediment sampling and laboratory analysis
- Preparing environmental reports suitable for use as official environmental compliance documentation
- Supporting notifications under the Dutch Soil Quality Decree (Besluit bodemkwaliteit – Bbk)
The completed reports serve as official documentation for submitting notifications under the Dutch Soil Quality Regulation (Regeling bodemkwaliteit), demonstrating that the planned works can be carried out safely, responsibly, and in compliance with environmental legislation.
Results and Impact
The sediment investigation provides an essential environmental foundation for the depoldering works and the further development of estuarine nature in the border region between the Netherlands and Belgium. Thanks to a thorough environmental assessment, the project can be executed efficiently, safely, and in full compliance with applicable legislation.
This project contributes to:
- Restoration of valuable estuarine ecosystems
- Enhancement of biodiversity
- Sustainable landscape development
- Cross-border cooperation between the Netherlands and Belgium
MH Poly is proud to contribute to a project with significant ecological and societal value.
